2021

Bagratuni

Type: Red, Dry

Grape: Sev Areni (Areni Noir)

Region: Vayotz Dzor

Producer: When the rebel meets the vine: Crow’s Rock Winery is the creation of a daring Armenian repat who left the comforts of California behind to shake up Armenia’s winemaking scene. Refusing to follow the beaten path, he returned to his ancestral homeland, studied the art of winemaking from the ground up, and set out to challenge tradition with bold ideas, deep respect for nature, and a relentless drive to ask:  “Why?”

Vinification: Gamila 2021 is a true expression of that spirit. Made from 100% Sev Areni grapes, hand-picked from own-rooted old bush vines in Aghavnadzor village at 1400 meters elevation, this wine is a first of its kind in Armenia. It was fermented with 10% whole clusters in open-top Armenian oak barrels—an experimental approach pioneered by Crow’s Rock. Native yeasts lead the fermentation, and no additives were used throughout the process. After aging for 12 months in second-use Armenian oak and 13 months in stainless steel tanks, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration on November 30, 2023. Only 2,200 bottles were produced.
