About Koghba Wines
Green Village presents dry and semi-dry wines from the Tavush region of Armenia. They've taken the most unique and authentic grapes of the region, selected the best of the harvest, and crafted this selection of Koghba Wines for you.
The winery was established in the North Eastern region of Armenia, Tavush. The factory was built on a small piece of land near Koghb village. Step by step, with hard work and love, they built the first "house" of Green Village. They sincerely believe that native indigenous grape varieties are not the past of winemaking in Armenia, but are the future. They do everything to raise awareness of these grapes, supporting and sharing their knowledge with local villagers. They developed a nursery to breed species such as Lalvari, Jrjruk, Khndoghni, and Jrali.
Green Village is proud to have such an experienced and motivated winemaker as Gagik Aghababyan. Thanks to his endless energy and dedication, the winery thrives with innovation and new tastes.
Gagik Aghababyan is a name deeply rooted in Armenian winemaking. With over 40 years of experience in the field, Gagik has dedicated his life to preserving and advancing the art of wine and spirits through innovation grounded in tradition. As the founder of Koghba and Aghababyan Wines, his journey took a bold and unconventional turn with his fascination for what the global market refers to as “Black Brandy.” Years of experimentation led him to the creation of his own masterpiece: the Black Pearl. Using high-quality, triply distilled alcohol made from Lalvari grapes, Gagik employed a unique method of aging. He infused the spirit with roasted roots from the Lalvari grapevine and acacia under meticulously controlled thermal conditions. This complex process gave birth to a beverage with an extraordinary greenish-blue hue with cherry and yellowish tones—nature’s art in a bottle.
But Gagik’s innovation didn’t stop there. The beverage undergoes multi-stage barrel aging, moving from preliminary to intermediary, and finally to the completion barrel. Each stage is tightly monitored, with laboratory and organoleptic tests guiding the process. Only when the spirit reaches the exact characteristics of the Black Pearl—floral tones, distinctive coloring, and harmonious flavor—is it deemed ready.
Unlike traditional brandy, the Black Pearl has a finite aging period—typically 3 to 5 years. Beyond this, it risks losing the very essence that defines it. Gagik’s vision was never to create just another dark brandy, but to craft a signature spirit that celebrates the elegance of Armenian terroir and grape character.
