Shivini

Type: Red, Dry

Grape: Sev Areni (Areni Noir) / Haghtanak

Region: Vayotz Dzor, Ararat

Producer: Crow’s Rock Winery.

Founded by an Armenian who returned home to his roots after many years in the diaspora—not to replicate tradition, but to rewrite it. With a rebellious spirit and a deep connection to the land, he champions organic farming and low-intervention methods, questioning norms and pushing boundaries to uncover new expressions of Armenian grape varieties.

Vinification: Shivini 2020 is a bold yet refined example of his fearless approach to blending and winemaking. Crafted from 75% Sev Areni and 25% Haghtanak—a richly pigmented teinturier grape—this wine unites the elegance of old vines with the structure and color intensity of a darker variety. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for 9 months in new Armenian oak, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration on July 24, 2021. Only 2,700 bottles were produced.

Tasting Notes: The wine is medium violet in color, has a pretty nose of fresh black berries, black cherry, green pepper, with hints of earthy and vegetal notes. Medium bodied with smooth texture, silky tannins, delicate acidity, layered with black berries, black plums, marmalade; long balanced finish.

Food Pairing: Grilled lamb kebabs, braised beef with herbs, roasted red peppers stuffed with rice and wild mushrooms. It’s also excellent alongside smoked cheeses and dishes with savory-sweet elements like prune-glazed pork.
